Hathurusinghe on Bangladesh protests: I hope the students get their answers

Chandika Hathurusinghe, known for his bluntness, displayed a rare emotional side during a recent press conference in Rawalpindi. When asked about the political unrest in Dhaka, where he arrived amid curfews and protests, Hathurusinghe struggled to keep his composure. Choking up, he expressed his condolences for the victims and hoped for answers to the students’ concerns, wishing for a return to normalcy in Bangladesh.

Despite the turmoil, Hathurusinghe remains focused on his role as Bangladesh’s head coach. Appointed in February 2023, his contract runs until the end of the 2025 Champions Trophy. Although he expressed a desire to continue, he is prepared to accept the Bangladesh Cricket Board’s decision, whether they choose to renew his contract or not.

With the ongoing unrest impacting his ability to train in Dhaka, the team has been training in Lahore. Hathurusinghe believes the team, though spin-heavy compared to Pakistan’s pace-focused lineup, has the depth in fast bowling to perform well on the Rawalpindi pitch, which favors pace and batting. He praised the development of young fast bowlers like Shoriful Islam and Taskin Ahmed, and expressed hope that the conditions in Pakistan will help improve their batting, which has struggled recently. Despite challenges, he is optimistic about his team’s prospects.
