Harry Brook Appointed England’s New White-Ball Captain for ODIs and T20Is

Harry Brook has officially been named England’s new white-ball captain, taking over leadership duties in both T20I and ODI formats. This comes after Jos Buttler stepped down following England’s disappointing early exit from the ICC Champions Trophy in March.

At 26, Brook has already served as England’s white-ball vice-captain for the past year and led the side in five ODIs against Australia last September. His first assignment as full-time captain will be a home series against West Indies, featuring three T20Is and three ODIs, starting at the end of May.

Harry Brook Appointed England's New White-Ball Captain for ODIs and T20IsExpressing his excitement, Brook said, “It’s a real honour. I’ve always dreamed of representing England and now leading the team is very special.”

Brook emerged as the leading candidate for the role, having become a key figure in all formats since debuting in 2022. He’s currently ranked the world’s No.2 Test batter, just behind Joe Root, and scored a career-best 317 against Pakistan in Multan.

He opted out of his IPL deal with Delhi Capitals earlier this year, prioritising national duty ahead of a busy schedule, which includes the India and Australia Test series and the 2026 T20 World Cup.

Despite limited captaincy experience, Brook impressed during the 3-2 ODI series against Australia and has previously led England’s Under-19s and Northern Superchargers in The Hundred. Though Ben Stokes was briefly considered for the ODI role, his ongoing recovery from surgery and past retirement from the format ruled him out.

Rob Key, England’s managing director, praised Brook’s cricketing intelligence and leadership potential, stating, “He has a clear vision for both teams and can help us win more major tournaments.”

Brook has played 26 ODIs and 44 T20Is for England, including a key role in their 2022 T20 World Cup win.
