Haris Rauf’s Central Contract Terminated by PCB Over Non-Commitment to Australia Tour

In a significant development, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has taken strict action against fast bowler Haris Rauf by terminating his central contract. This decision stems from Rauf’s choice to make himself unavailable for Pakistan’s Test series against Australia late last year. The PCB, after conducting a thorough hearing, announced the decision, considering the perspectives of all stakeholders involved.

Consequences of Termination:

Consequently, Rauf loses his central contract and faces NOC restrictions for overseas leagues until June 30, 2024. Despite these penalties, the PCB underscores Rauf’s continued inclusion in the national side and expects his availability for all international commitments during this period.

Hearings centered on Rauf’s decision to skip the critical Test series in Australia, drawing criticism from chief selector Wahab Riaz. Riaz accused Rauf of breaking a prior commitment, raising concerns about its repercussions on Pakistan cricket.

Unsatisfactory Response:

In response to the criticism, the PCB provided Rauf with a chance for a personal hearing on January 30, 2024. However, his response was deemed unsatisfactory by the board. The PCB asserts that playing for Pakistan is the highest honor for any sportsperson, and Rauf’s refusal to be part of the Test squad without a valid reason or medical report constitutes a material violation of the central contract.

The decision not to grant Rauf an NOC until the end of June is seen more as a symbolic expression of dissatisfaction rather than a significant material disadvantage. The upcoming Pakistan Super League (PSL), scheduled to begin on February 17, aligns with Rauf’s commitments. Additionally, his involvement in the Indian Premier League (IPL) is not a factor, as it follows the PSL.

Rauf’s involvement in the T20 Blast may be hindered, but national white-ball series commitments in England take priority. The NOC restriction coincides with the T20 World Cup, impacting Rauf’s participation in overseas tournaments.

As of now, it remains uncertain if Haris Rauf has any avenues for appealing the PCB’s decision.
