The Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) find themselves in a rut as the IPL 2024 season unfolds. Despite boasting a star-studded batting line-up featuring the likes of Virat Kohli, Faf du Plessis, and the explosive Glenn Maxwell, their dream of lifting the IPL trophy seems to be fading fast. With just a solitary victory in their initial three matches, RCB’s struggles can be attributed to a glaring weakness – their ineffective bowling attack.

Batting Firepower Fails to Ignite Victories

Harbhajan Singh Talks About RCB's Bowling Approach

RCB’s batting unit, on paper, appears formidable. But even their big guns have been unable to consistently deliver, leaving them with a win-loss record that has fallen short of expectations. While the likes of Kohli and du Plessis boast exceptional talent, translating that into consistent wins has proven difficult.

Bowling Blues: A Cause for Concern

The Achilles’ heel for RCB has undoubtedly been their bowling attack. Despite significant investment in Alzarri Joseph, who was acquired for a hefty INR 11.5 Crore, the Caribbean pacer has been a major disappointment. His underwhelming performance includes just one wicket claimed and an economy rate that has ballooned to 11.9 runs per over.

Even Mohammed Siraj, leading the RCB bowling attack, hasn’t been able to deliver as expected. While he has managed two wickets, his bowling economy stands at a concerning 10 runs per over. This lack of control and wicket-taking prowess from their frontline bowlers has left RCB vulnerable.

Harbhajan Singh’s Scathing Critique

Former Indian cricket legend Harbhajan Singh hasn’t minced words when critiquing RCB’s strategy. He has pointed out their overemphasis on acquiring overseas batsmen at the expense of a potent bowling attack, a weakness that has plagued the franchise for years.

Harbhajan emphasizes the need for a balanced team with a bowling attack capable of defending even moderate totals. He argues that with a strong bowling unit, a target of 180 runs should be within reach. However, RCB’s current bowling line-up leaves them exposed even with such scores on the board.
