Hanuma Vihari, the Indian cricketer, is determined to make a comeback to the Test team by finishing the Ranji Trophy season strongly.
Vihari’s impressive form has been pivotal to Andhra Pradesh’s performance in the Elite Group B of the Ranji Trophy. With three wins in five games, Andhra currently holds the second position in the group standings.
The 30-year-old batter has been a standout performer for his team, amassing 365 runs in seven innings. He trails only team captain Ricky Bhui, who has scored 550 runs. Vihari’s consistent performances have helped maintain his domestic cricket average above 50.
Despite facing challenges in securing a spot in India’s playing XI, Hanuma Vihari remains determined to make an impact in domestic cricket and earn a recall to the Test team.
“I feel disappointed about not being in the Test team, but I understand that everyone experiences highs and lows. My focus now is on scoring runs in the Ranji Trophy. The season has been decent for both the team and me. Therefore, my goal is to contribute significantly with the bat and earn my place back in the Test team,” Vihari expressed to ESPNcricinfo following Andhra’s victory over Bihar.
Vihari’s resilient knock of 23* off 161 deliveries against Australia in Sydney in 2021 is etched in Indian Test cricket history. However, he has been absent from Test action since then, suggesting that he might not currently be in the selectors’ plans.
“I haven’t had any recent conversations with the selectors. Rahul Dravid did provide me with feedback after my last Test, highlighting areas for improvement. However, I haven’t been in contact with anyone since then,” Vihari disclosed.
His last Test appearance came in 2022 at Edgbaston, where he scored 22 and 11. Now, Vihari is focused on enhancing his game and relishing every moment on the field.
“I am solely focused on honing my skills and enjoying the game. Without these aspects, there’s no purpose. Each time I step onto the field, I strive to give my best and contribute to the team’s success. At this stage of my career, I harbor no expectations. I simply aim to give my all and accept whatever outcome follows,” Vihari added.
Andhra Pradesh’s next challenge is against Uttar Pradesh on February 9 at the PVG Raju ACA Sports Complex.
