Hamilton Masakadza has stepped down as Zimbabwe Cricket’s (ZC) Director of Cricket this week. Masakadza, the former Zimbabwe captain, assumed the role shortly after retiring from all cricket formats in October 2019.

In his resignation letter, Hamilton Masakadza cited Zimbabwe’s failure to qualify for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 as the main reason for his decision to resign. He expressed disappointment over Zimbabwe’s inability to secure a spot in the tournament, following their shock loss to Uganda. Masakadza took full responsibility for the team’s performance, acknowledging it as one of the lowest points of his career.
ZC Managing Director Givemore Makoni acknowledged Masakadza’s significant contributions to Zimbabwean cricket both on and off the field. Makoni highlighted Hamilton Masakadza efforts in laying the foundations for identifying, developing, and preparing the next generation of players.
During his tenure, Hamilton Masakadza led Zimbabwe to qualify for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia. He also introduced several new tournaments aimed at improving the game’s standards in Zimbabwe, including the National Premier League and the Zim Afro T10 league for men, as well as two women’s provincial competitions. Additionally, Masakadza oversaw the organization of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Qualifier 2022 and the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Qualifier 2023 in Zimbabwe.
Despite stepping down, Masakadza expressed his willingness to remain involved in Zimbabwe Cricket, particularly in preparations for the ICC Under-19 Men’s Cricket World Cup 2026 and the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027, which Zimbabwe is set to co-host. He indicated his interest in serving in a different capacity within the organization.
