Guyana is set to launch the Global Super League, a new T20 tournament scheduled from November 26 to December 7. This five-team competition, sanctioned by Cricket West Indies (CWI), will feature teams from around the world and offers a prize pool of US$1 million. The government of Guyana is a key stakeholder, backing the league as part of its push to promote sports tourism.
The Global Super League will include Guyana Amazon Warriors from the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) and four invited teams from established T20 leagues globally. Hampshire, a three-time champion of England’s T20 Blast, is one of the invited teams. The tournament will feature 11 matches, with each team playing four group-stage games. The top two teams will advance to the final. All matches are set to take place at the Guyana National Stadium in Providence.
Clive Lloyd, chairman of the Global Super League, expressed excitement for the event, emphasizing the passion for cricket in Guyana. He highlighted the opportunity to showcase the country’s love for the game to both local and global audiences.
Guyana Amazon Warriors, the 2023 CPL champions, will look to carry their momentum into the new competition; consequently, they aim to build on their recent success. They finally won their first CPL title after losing six finals in 2013, 2014, 2016, 2018, 2019, and 2024. The league aims to further enhance Guyana’s reputation as a hub for international cricket.
