England allrounder Moeen Ali is set for his first stint in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) after being signed by defending champions Guyana Amazon Warriors. Moeen, 37, will replace Pakistan opener Saim Ayub, who is unavailable for the entire season. Ayub’s absence significantly impacts the Warriors, as he stood out during their 2023 title run. He scored 478 runs in 13 innings, averaging 43.45 with a strike rate of 142.26, and hit 28 sixes, the most in CPL 2023.
Ayub’s Absence Due to Pakistan Commitments
Ayub is missing the CPL due to Pakistan’s Test series against Bangladesh and his participation in the Champions One-Day Cup, Pakistan’s domestic 50-over competition, where he will play for Panthers.
Moeen’s Availability Depends on T20 Blast
Moeen’s availability for the Warriors depends on Birmingham Bears’ progress in the UK’s T20 Blast. If the Bears win their quarter-final against Gloucestershire, Moeen will remain in the UK for the Finals Day on September 14.
Tim Robinson Joins as Temporary Replacement
Until Moeen joins the squad, New Zealand’s hard-hitting opener Tim Robinson will fill in temporarily. Known for his six-hitting ability, Robinson had an impressive 2023-24 Super Smash, scoring 298 runs in six innings at a strike rate of 187.42, including a blistering 139 off 64 balls. Robinson recently debuted for New Zealand in T20Is and has been honing his skills against spin at the Super Kings Academy in Chennai.
Robinson to Cover for Rahmanullah Gurbaz
Even after Moeen joins the squad, Robinson will still stay on as cover for Rahmanullah Gurbaz, who is set to leave the CPL after the Barbados leg for international duty. Specifically, Gurbaz will play in Afghanistan’s three-match ODI series against South Africa in the UAE. However, he plans to return for the final leg of the CPL in Guyana, at which point Robinson will step aside for him.
Warriors Off to a Strong Start
In the absence of Ayub, the Warriors initially experimented with Gudakesh Motie and Kevin Sinclair as openers, but the arrivals of Moeen and Robinson provide them with more reliable top-order options. The Warriors have started their title defense strongly, winning their first two games of the season.
