In the first ODI between West Indies and England, Evin Lewis and Gudakesh Motie led the hosts to a dominant victory. England, hoping to recover their past white-ball success, were outclassed by a resurgent West Indies in Antigua. England’s youthful lineup struggled to adapt to the 50-over format, showing unfamiliarity with its demands. Lewis, who recently returned to the West Indies’ setup, showcased his power-hitting with a blistering 94 off 69 balls. Smashing eight sixes, he dismantled England’s attack and eased West Indies to an eight-wicket win (DLS method) in their chase of a revised 157-run target.

The West Indies’ bowlers, led by Motie’s 4-41, had previously restricted England to 209 runs. Motie’s tactical spin bowling, alongside Jayden Seales’ early breakthroughs, applied steady pressure on England. England’s innings lacked momentum, with openers Phil Salt and Will Jacks departing early. Only stand-in captain Liam Livingstone and Sam Curran displayed resilience, with a 72-run fifth-wicket stand, before Motie dismissed both to cripple England’s hopes.

Rain briefly halted play, but by then West Indies were cruising with Lewis at 51 and Brandon King supporting him. After the break, Lewis continued his aggressive play, while King offered steady support. The duo’s 118-run partnership set up an easy finish, allowing Keacy Carty and Shai Hope to wrap up the chase with 24.1 overs to spare. The match underscored England’s challenges with an inexperienced squad and highlighted West Indies’ strength with returning players like Lewis. This victory sets the tone for the series as England looks to find footing in the 50-over format.
