England’s Joe Root Overtakes Sachin Tendulkar to Claim No.1 Spot on Rare List

2024 is turning out to be a remarkable year for England’s Joe Root. The batting maestro has made history once again by surpassing India’s legendary Sachin Tendulkar to claim the top spot on the list of batters with the most runs in the fourth innings of Test cricket. Root achieved this feat during the first Test against New Zealand, which England won by eight wickets.

With England chasing a modest target of 100 runs in the opening match, Joe Root played a crucial role, scoring an unbeaten 23 runs off 15 balls, including three boundaries and a six. His quick-fire knock helped England seal the win and take a 1-0 lead in the series.

Root’s total of 1,630 runs in fourth innings now surpasses Tendulkar’s 1,625 runs. The list is as follows:

  • 1,630 runs – Joe Root
  • 1,625 runs – Sachin Tendulkar
  • 1,611 runs – Alastair Cook
  • 1,611 runs – Graeme Smith
  • 1,580 runs – Shivnarine Chanderpaul

Joe Root’s record-breaking year continues with his impressive tally of five centuries in 2024, making him the player with the most hundreds this year. In just 14 matches, Root has accumulated 1,338 runs at an average of 58.17 and a strike rate of 61.01. His consistency across formats highlights his adaptability and skills in different conditions.

Sri Lanka’s Kamindu Mendis also shares the top spot with Root, having scored five centuries in 30 matches at an average of 53.80. Root’s performances in 2024 firmly solidify his place among the best in modern cricket.
