In honor of the late Graham Thorpe, England announced they will wear black armbands during the match. Thorpe, who passed away at age 55 on August 4 after battling anxiety and depression, was a significant figure in English cricket both as a player and a coach.

“We’ll wear our black armbands throughout the game, and there will be a tribute to him before the match,” said Pope. He also expressed his sorrow and admiration for Thorpe, noting his profound impact on the team. Pope said, “It’s hurt a lot of people in that changing room. He was a great man. I had the privilege of working with him for a few years as a batting coach. I admired him greatly.”

Thorpe, who played 100 Test matches for England, also served as the team’s assistant and batting coach. He played a key role in shaping the careers of Joe Root and Ben Stokes. Thorpe had previously attempted to take his own life in 2022 and spent an extended period in the ICU. In tribute, Ben Stokes had worn a shirt bearing Thorpe’s name.
