Empty Seats at Lord’s for ENG-SL Test Prompt MCC to Review Ticket Prices

The 2nd Test between England and Sri Lanka concluded on September 1 with England securing a convincing 190-run victory, clinching the series 2-0 with one game remaining. The match, like the first Test, ended on the fourth day. Sri Lanka, starting day four at 53/2, fell to 292, allowing England to secure a comfortable win.

However, the game at Lord’s saw only 9,000 spectators on day four, despite the stadium’s capacity of 31,000. This low turnout has, therefore, raised concerns about the future of Test cricket. Consequently, it has prompted a review of ticket pricing.

The Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) plans to address the issue by reviewing ticket prices for fourth-day play. Given the trend of Test matches often finishing by day four, MCC Chief Secretary Guy Lavender stated they will reconsider their pricing structure. “We will be paying particular attention to the structure of fourth-day tickets in our pricing reviews,” Lavender said. He also noted that while they had introduced discounted tickets for U16s and group bookings, it is challenging to adjust prices retrospectively after tickets have been sold through a ballot process.

In player news, Gus Atkinson shone for England at Lord’s. After making his Test debut there with a five-wicket haul against the West Indies, Atkinson took another five wickets in the recent match, helping restrict Sri Lanka to 292 runs.
