Brendon McCullum’s plan for an all-spin bowling attack in the second Test against India faces a setback. Jack Leach’s knee injury from the series opener may prevent his recovery in time. The left-arm spinner aggravated the injury, impacting both his fielding and bowling abilities. The extent of Leach’s participation in the upcoming Test remains uncertain and depends on his recovery progress.

Jack Leach bowled 10 overs despite knee strapping in the first Test’s second innings. Jeetan Patel, England’s spin-bowling coach, disclosed Leach hadn’t bowled in nets on January 31. With the second Test in Vishakapatnam a day away, Leach’s inclusion in the playing XI is uncertain. His knee condition will be closely monitored before any decision is made on his participation.

In the absence of Leach, England is likely to opt for a spin-heavy strategy once again, potentially bringing in Shoaib Bashir for his debut. Bashir, who arrived in India late due to visa issues, is now the only frontline spin option available. Tom Hartley, who impressed with a seven-wicket haul in the second innings of the first Test, is expected to retain his place, alongside Rehan Ahmed, the most experienced spinner in the squad with two appearances. Additionally, England captain Joe Root’s off-spin bowling adds depth to the spin department.

The second Test between Team India and England in Vishakapatnam is scheduled to begin on Friday, February 2. England currently holds a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.
