This will be Karthik’s first tournament since he announced his retirement from “representative cricket” in June, coinciding with his 39th birthday. Karthik, who has played 180 international matches for India, last appeared in IPL 2024 for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). RCB has now signed him as a mentor and batting coach.

Karthik’s extensive T20 experience has made him one of the sharpest analysts of the shortest format of the game. He has played 401 T20 matches and has been part of six IPL teams, including a leadership role with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). Karthik also holds the distinction of being among the fittest players in the IPL, having missed just two matches over 17 seasons.

Karthik shared his excitement about joining Paarl Royals, saying, “I have many fond memories of South Africa, and when this opportunity arose, I couldn’t turn it down. It feels special to return to competitive cricket and aim to win this incredible competition with the Royals.”

Due to BCCI regulations, only retired Indian players are eligible to participate in overseas T20 leagues. Last year, Ambati Rayudu, Robin Uthappa, and Yusuf Pathan joined various T20 leagues, while Suresh Raina played in the Abu Dhabi T10.

Paarl Royals have announced their retentions for the new season, with captain David Miller, Lungi Ngidi, and Andile Phehlukwayo among those confirmed. Despite making the Qualifiers in the previous SA20 edition, the Royals suffered five consecutive losses, including a heavy defeat against Joburg Super Kings in the Eliminator.

Kumar Sangakkara, the Royals’ director of cricket, expressed enthusiasm about Karthik’s signing: “Dinesh is a modern great in white-ball cricket. His vast experience and impact will greatly benefit our team for Season 3. We look forward to having him with us in Paarl.”
