Dawid Malan, Former Top-Ranked T20I Batter for England, Retires from International Cricket

Dawid Malan, England’s former top-ranked T20I batter, has announced his retirement from international cricket at 37. Malan, who played 22 Tests, 30 ODIs, and 62 T20Is, is one of only two England men’s batters, alongside Jos Buttler, to score centuries in all three formats. However, after not being selected for England since the 50-over World Cup in India last year, Malan decided to retire following his omission from the upcoming white-ball series against Australia.

Malan truly made his mark in T20Is, particularly after England’s 2019 ODI World Cup win. He cemented his place in the team with consistent performances, including a rapid century in New Zealand and reaching the top of the ICC T20I rankings in September 2020. By March 2021, he became the fastest man to 1,000 T20I runs, achieving the milestone in just 24 innings. Malan was also a key player in England’s 2022 T20 World Cup victory, although he missed the knockout stages due to a groin injury.

Impact in One-Day Internationals

In ODIs, Malan’s impact came later, but he quickly made his case with five centuries in 15 innings between June 2022 and September 2023, which earned him a spot in the 2023 World Cup squad. Despite a century in the tournament, England’s disappointing overall performance led to his exit.

While Malan regrets not having a more consistent Test career, he remains proud of his contributions across formats. He cited the mental demands of Test cricket, particularly during long series, as a challenge.
