Pat Cummins is likely to miss Australia’s upcoming tour of Sri Lanka to prioritize his family, with his second child due soon. Despite this, there’s no indication that his role as Australia’s Test captain is nearing an end. The six-wicket victory over India at the SCG sealed the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, ensuring Australia holds every bilateral trophy they compete for under Cummins’ leadership.

Cummins has led Australia through successful campaigns, including ODI and T20 World Cup victories. Asked if he felt he had “completed cricket” after the SCG win, Cummins emphasized his passion for the game and his leadership role. “I absolutely love what I do,” he said. “If I can keep doing it for a while, even better.”
Steven Smith is expected to step in as captain for the Sri Lanka tour, having previously filled the role on four occasions since Cummins took over from Tim Paine in 2021. While discussions about succession planning are ongoing, Cummins sees himself continuing to lead, especially with major Test tours of India and England in 2027.
Australia’s Test team has undergone a significant transition, with younger players like Sam Konstas making their mark. However, Cummins remains central to the team’s future plans, balancing immediate success with long-term goals.
Cummins’ leadership in the 3-1 Border-Gavaskar Trophy win was critical. The team faced criticism after a heavy defeat in the series opener, with claims of internal issues and concerns over their preparation. Despite the scrutiny, Cummins stayed composed and made key tactical decisions, particularly during the tense victory at the MCG.
Reflecting on the series, Cummins said, “It shows a strength of the group to stay strong. We knew we weren’t at our best but could be better.”
