Yashasvi Jaiswal has rapidly emerged as a key player for India since making his international debut during the 2023 Caribbean tour. The southpaw announced his arrival with a century in his debut Test and has since been outstanding in the purest format of the game. Jaiswal is India’s leading Test run-scorer in 2024, amassing 1304 runs in 13 matches at an average of 54.33. His aggressive approach is reflected in his strike rate of 72.56, which includes three centuries and seven fifties.
The 22-year-old is now on the brink of breaking Sachin Tendulkar’s 14-year-old record for most Test runs in a calendar year by an Indian. Tendulkar scored 1562 runs in 14 Tests in 2010 at an exceptional average of 78.10, with seven hundreds and five fifties. Jaiswal, who trails by 259 runs, has four innings left this year to achieve the milestone. His form and consistency make him a strong contender to surpass the Indian legend.
Currently, Jaiswal stands behind greats like Sunil Gavaskar, Rahul Dravid, Virender Sehwag, and Virat Kohli in this elite list. However, with his current rhythm, he has a chance to surpass them all. Globally, Pakistan’s Mohammad Yousuf holds the record for the most Test runs in a calendar year, scoring 1788 runs in 2006 at an incredible average of 99.33 with nine hundreds.
Jaiswal is also closing in on the 2024 leading run-scorer, Joe Root, who currently has 1470 runs. Notably, the young Indian opener needs just 167 more runs to overtake Root, further showcasing his potential to end the year as the highest Test run-scorer globally. Consequently, his remarkable form makes him a strong contender for this prestigious milestone.
