Suryakumar Yadav, captain of India’s T20I team, has suffered a worrying hand injury during the Buchi Babu tournament while playing against Tamil Nadu Cricket Association XI.
Injury Details and Match Impact

The injury happened on the third day of the match when Suryakumar was fielding at leg slip. He tried to stop a flick shot by Pradosh Ranjan Paul off Musheer Khan’s delivery, but the ball struck his hand, causing him severe pain. As a result, he left the field and did not bat in Mumbai’s second innings. His team faced a heavy defeat by 286 runs due to poor performances.
The severity of Suryakumar’s injury raises concerns about his availability for the upcoming Duleep Trophy 2024, where he was hoping to showcase his skills for a possible Test team recall. There has been no official update from the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) regarding the full extent of his injury, which could impact his participation in the tournament.
Ambitions and Impact on Test Cricket
Despite his success in T20 cricket, Suryakumar is eager to make a mark in Test cricket. His only Test appearance was against Australia in February 2023, where he scored just eight runs. He was part of the India C squad for the Duleep Trophy, led by Ruturaj Gaikwad. His potential absence could be a significant setback for the team.
With India’s busy Test schedule ahead, including about 10 matches, Suryakumar’s performance in the Duleep Trophy could greatly influence his chances for a Test comeback.
