Shubman Gill is likely to make his ODI captaincy debut in India’s final group-stage match against New Zealand in the ICC Champions Trophy. According to reports, the Indian vice-captain may lead the team in this crucial clash, as regular skipper Rohit Sharma is dealing with a hamstring injury. Gill has previously captained India in T20Is and could now take charge in the 50-over format.

Rohit suffered the injury during the match against Pakistan but downplayed concerns in the post-match presentation. However, a Times of India report revealed that he skipped Wednesday’s practice session at the ICC Academy, raising speculation about his fitness. With India already through to the semifinals, the team management may prioritize his recovery over playing the New Zealand fixture.
Meanwhile, The Indian Express, quoted by Inside Sports, reported that Gill will likely captain India if Rohit is unavailable. The 25-year-old, who missed Wednesday’s practice due to illness, returned to the nets on Thursday and spent significant time batting. He has been in fine form, amassing 147 runs in two matches so far.
If Rohit is rested, Rishabh Pant could make his first appearance in the tournament. The dynamic wicketkeeper-batter has yet to feature in the Champions Trophy but may get a chance in the playing XI. Additionally, KL Rahul might move up the order to open alongside Gill. With a semifinal spot secured, India could use this match to test different combinations while ensuring key players remain fit for the knockout stages.
