The Brisbane Heat have secured a key player for their BBL title defense by re-signing former New Zealand batter Colin Munro for two more seasons.
Colin Munro’s Impressive T20 Career
Munro, who retired from international cricket earlier this year after missing New Zealand’s T20 World Cup squad, has played 428 T20 matches in various competitions, amassing 10,961 runs at a career strike rate of 141.25, with five centuries and 67 half-centuries.
The 37-year-old is set to start his third season with the Brisbane Heat squad in 2024. He becomes the BBL’s fourth player signed under new rules permitting each club to secure one international player on a multi-year deal ahead of the overseas player draft.
Munro, part of the Perth Scorchers’ 2021-22 BBL title-winning team, has scored 502 runs in the past two seasons with the Brisbane Heat, including impressive innings of 98 and 99 not out. Previously, he left early to join the Desert Vipers ILT20 competition, but his new deal ensures he will be available for all BBL matches, including finals.
While England international and former Heat star Sam Billings has joined Sydney Thunder next season and Heat cult hero Josh Brown will play for Melbourne Renegades, Munro will lead a strong Brisbane Heat lineup alongside Australia’s Usman Khawaja and Matt Renshaw, aiming to be part of a championship side.
“It was pretty poignant to be away and watch the boys improve to win the title, especially after the disappointment of losing in the final at the death the previous season,” Munro said. “It’s a strong squad again and I’m looking forward to being part of what we can build together. There are always opportunities to get better, and as a group, we should be excited about the new goals we will pursue this summer.”
The Brisbane Heat also have a new coach for next season, with Johan Botha new coach replacing Wade Seccombe.
