Sarfaraz Khan will miss Mumbai’s first Ranji Trophy match after scoring a double hundred in the Irani Cup

Sarfaraz Khan, the standout Indian batter, will not feature in Mumbai’s squad for the first two matches of the 2024-25 Ranji Trophy, as announced by the Mumbai Cricket Association. Mumbai will kick off their Ranji campaign with an away match against Baroda on October 11, followed by a home game against Maharashtra on October 18.

According to Press Trust of India, Sarfaraz will be training at the National Cricket Academy in preparation for the New Zealand series, which coincides with the Ranji matches. The second game against Maharashtra clashes with the first Test against New Zealand, further confirming his absence from the squad. As a regular member of the Indian Test team, Sarfaraz is expected to miss a significant portion of the upcoming Ranji season.

Sarfaraz recently made headlines by scoring a double century in the Irani Cup clash against the Rest of India, solidifying his status as one of Mumbai’s most successful batters in recent years. However, his national commitments have necessitated his withdrawal from state duties.

Mumbai, the reigning Ranji champions, will be led by Ajinkya Rahane, who also captained the team during last season’s triumph and played a pivotal role in winning the Irani Cup after 27 years. Alongside Rahane, Mumbai’s squad boasts talented players such as Shreyas Iyer, Prithvi Shaw, and Shardul Thakur, positioning them well to defend their title.
