A day after announcing his retirement from international cricket, Ravichandran Ashwin received a hero’s welcome in Chennai. Upon arriving at his residence, the former spinner was greeted with a warm reception from family, friends, and fans.
R Ashwin, India’s veteran off-spinner, announced his retirement during the Gabba Test against Australia. The 38-year-old, having decided before the series, ended his remarkable career amid an emotional farewell from his teammates. Ashwin’s retirement marked the conclusion of an era defined by exceptional skill and consistency in international cricket.
Following the announcement, R Ashwin departed the Indian squad and returned home. Upon his arrival in Chennai, he was welcomed with traditional music and heartfelt celebrations. Emotional moments ensued as Ashwin’s parents and close friends gathered to celebrate his illustrious career. Ashwin expressed gratitude while holding back tears, appreciating the love and support showered upon him.
Ashwin’s achievements remain unparalleled. In 106 Tests, he claimed 537 wickets, becoming India’s second-highest wicket-taker in the format. Indian captain Rohit Sharma shared insights into Ashwin’s decision, revealing he first learned about the retirement in Perth. Rohit managed to persuade R Ashwin to stay for the pink-ball Test in Adelaide. However, Ashwin remained resolute in his decision, stepping away after the third Test in Gabba.
As R Ashwin begins a new chapter, the BCCI is yet to announce his replacement for the remainder of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
