Phoebe Litchfield Appointed Captain of Sydney Thunder

Phoebe Litchfield’s career continues to rise after the Sydney Thunder named her captain for the upcoming Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) season. At just 21 years old, Litchfield will become the youngest full-time captain in WBBL history. She takes over the captaincy from England’s Heather Knight, who led the team last season but will miss part of this year’s competition due to an injury sustained during the T20 World Cup and her commitments to the England tour of South Africa.

“It’s a huge honor to be named captain of Sydney Thunder,” Litchfield expressed. “I’ve grown up playing for this club and learning from incredible leaders, so the opportunity to lead such a talented group is really exciting.” She highlighted the blend of experience and youthful talent within the team, expressing enthusiasm for the challenges ahead.

Litchfield made her Thunder debut at the age of 16 and has since amassed 1,212 runs in 67 matches, averaging 24.24. Last season, her performance improved significantly, as she scored 309 runs at an impressive strike rate of 130.37.

Trent Copeland, the Thunder’s general manager, praised Litchfield’s appointment, stating, “Phoebe becoming captain just feels right. She’s young, but her experience makes this a natural progression.” He noted her maturity and leadership qualities, which have been evident since she joined the team.

In addition to Litchfield, the Thunder will benefit from the experience of players like Chamari Athapaththu, Hannah Darlington, Shabnim Ismail, and Sammy-Jo Johnson, along with coach Lisa Keightley. The Thunder reached the Eliminator final last season but lost to the Brisbane Heat. They will kick off their tournament against the Hobart Hurricanes on October 28.
