Hockley, who first took on the role of interim CEO in 2020 before becoming the permanent CEO 11 months later, cited the forthcoming blockbuster summer and the progress of Cricket Australia’s five-year strategic plan as key factors in his decision. In his announcement, Hockley expressed, “This was a difficult decision, however, this is the right time to pursue another challenge while giving the Board ample opportunity to find a successor who can build on the strong foundations now in place.”

Under Hockley’s leadership, Cricket Australia has achieved significant milestones, including the development and implementation of a comprehensive five-year strategy and securing major media deals with Seven West Media, Foxtel Group, and Disney Star in India. He emphasized that his focus remains firmly on the upcoming season and ensuring a smooth transition for his successor. “This is not the time for goodbyes, as I remain completely focused on the season ahead and supporting the Board on succession and a smooth transition,” Hockley concluded.
