MS Dhoni’s IPL Future Will Depend on Retention Rules

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will soon meet with IPL team owners at its Mumbai headquarters to discuss the retention policy for the upcoming season. Currently, teams are allowed to retain only four players, but discussions suggest this number may increase to six or eight.

MS Dhoni's IPL Future Will Depend on Retention Rules

MS Dhoni has been a cornerstone of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) since the franchise’s inception. As the most expensive player in the inaugural draft, Dhoni has become synonymous with the Super Kings, leading them to five titles and setting a record for the most play-off qualifications in IPL history.

Speculation has arisen about Dhoni possibly leaving CSK as a player before the 2025 season. However, his future with the team will depend on the BCCI’s decision on the maximum number of retentions allowed. If the retention limit exceeds four players, Dhoni is likely to stay with CSK, according to Cricbuzz.

Dhoni has not yet confirmed his availability for the 2025 season, fueling further speculation. His continued presence may depend on the Impact Player rule. This rule could allow CSK to use players like Sameer Rizvi. Shivam Dube, who substituted for others in the 2024 season, might also benefit from this rule.

Ruturaj Gaikwad was named captain a year ago, following CSK’s 2023 title win against the Gujarat Titans. As August 15th approaches, the cricket community eagerly awaits updates on Dhoni’s retention or potential retirement.
