Michael Clarke has weighed in on Australia’s opening combination dilemma for the upcoming home Test series against India. Australia considered all-rounder Cameron Green for the role, but he withdrew from the Border-Gavaskar Trophy after undergoing back surgery.

Clarke has voiced his support for Cameron Bancroft to take the opener’s spot over rising talent Sam Konstas. Despite Konstas’ impressive form, including twin centuries in a recent Sheffield Shield match, Clarke believes Bancroft’s consistent performances over the past few years make him the more deserving candidate.

Speaking on Sky Sports Radio’s Big Sports Breakfast, Clarke emphasized that selectors shouldn’t overlook Bancroft’s 12 centuries in the last four years in favor of a player with just one standout performance. He also suggested that the Australian team management likely decided on the opener as soon as Green was ruled out.

Bancroft has been one of Australia’s leading run-scorers in the Sheffield Shield, amassing 945 runs in the 2022-23 season at an average of 59.06, followed by 778 runs in 2023-24 at 48.62. Meanwhile, Konstas’ recent success has drawn attention, but Clarke believes Bancroft’s experience and consistency give him the edge for the opener’s role.
