Kevin Pietersen played a key role in facilitating a landmark deal between the co-owners of the Delhi Capitals and Hampshire, as reported by ESPNcricinfo. Following extensive discussions, Hampshire announced a new “strategic partnership” with the GMR Group, which Pietersen described as a “historic day in English cricket.”

Pietersen, who had a stint with Hampshire from 2005 to 2010 and previously captained Delhi in the IPL, has maintained a close relationship with GMR chairman Kiran Kumar Grandhi. The two attended a recent T20I match between England and Australia together.
Although Pietersen has no active business ties to GMR or Hampshire, he is believed to have introduced the parties informally. In response to the deal, he expressed excitement on X, stating, “HISTORIC DAY in English Cricket! Congrats to everyone on this journey. It’s only the start…. LFG! [Let’s f***ing go].”
Rod Bransgrove, chairman of Hampshire’s parent company, noted that he spent 18 months engaging potential investors, ultimately choosing GMR due to their values and commitment to social responsibility. He confirmed Pietersen’s involvement, highlighting his ambassadorial role for GMR and understanding of both organizations’ cultures.
GMR is also in talks to acquire a 49% stake in Southern Brave amid the ECB’s privatization of the Hundred. Bransgrove emphasized that the deal with GMR was independent of the Hundred franchise negotiations.
Bransgrove expressed a desire for Hampshire to maintain its leadership position in English cricket, mentioning plans for Hampshire to participate in international franchise competitions. He believes this partnership with GMR will enhance Hampshire’s prospects and capitalize on emerging trends in cricket.
