Kane Williamson will not travel to India for the final Test of the current series, prioritizing his recovery for the upcoming three-Test series against England starting November 28. New Zealand Cricket (NZC) announced that this decision is a “cautious approach” as Williamson continues rehabilitation for his groin injury in New Zealand.
“Kane continues to show good signs, but isn’t quite ready to jump on a plane and join us,” said head coach Gary Stead. He emphasized that while Williamson is improving, it is best for him to remain in New Zealand and focus on completing his rehabilitation for a full return in time for the England series. With the series still a month away, this cautious approach will help ensure he stays fit for the first Test in Christchurch.
Historic Series Victory Against India
Williamson’s injury occurred during the tour of Sri Lanka last month, just before the India series. Despite his absence, New Zealand has made history by winning the first two Tests against India in Bengaluru and Pune, marking India’s first home Test series loss since 2012 and breaking an impressive streak of 18 consecutive home series victories. Under the new captaincy of Tom Latham, New Zealand leads the series 2-0, achieving their first Test series win in India.
In the first Test, New Zealand overwhelmed India, bowling them out for just 46 runs in the first innings and winning by eight wickets. The second Test saw India dismissed for 156, leading to a 113-run victory for New Zealand. The third Test is scheduled to begin on November 1 in Mumbai. Following the series loss, India’s lead at the top of the World Test Championship points table has decreased, now sitting at 62.82%, while New Zealand has moved up to fourth place with 50% points, improving their chances for the WTC final next year.
