Jonny Bairstow to make Yorkshire return in County Championship

Jonny Bairstow will play his first match of the season for Yorkshire this week as the County Championship resumes after a six-week break. Bairstow, who has only played two first-class games for Yorkshire since 2020 due to his commitments with England and the IPL, will return for Thursday’s match against Sussex at Scarborough. Despite missing the earlier part of the season and taking a short break between the T20 World Cup and the start of The Hundred, where he represented Welsh Fire, Bairstow is eager to contribute.

Yorkshire currently sits just outside the promotion spots in Division Two, four points behind Middlesex and 27 points behind leaders Sussex, making this game crucial as they enter the final stretch of the season. Bairstow, who lost his place in England’s Test team after a difficult tour of India, is unlikely to feature in England’s upcoming white-ball series against Australia. However, he remains determined to regain his spot in the national team.

Yorkshire head coach Ottis Gibson emphasized Bairstow’s hunger to return to England duty, stating that the club will support him in achieving that goal. Bairstow, described as “dangerous” when he has something to prove, could be a key player in Yorkshire’s promotion push. Yorkshire will be without captain Shan Masood this week, as he joins Pakistan’s Test squad, and the club is also preparing for the departure of head coach Ottis Gibson at the end of the season.
