South Africa suffered a setback on the morning of the first ODI against Australia as fast bowler Kagiso Rabada was ruled out of the entire three-match series. The 30-year-old pacer underwent a scan on Monday, which revealed ankle inflammation, forcing him to miss the series. He will stay on in Australia to undergo rehabilitation under the supervision of the South African medical team.

In his absence, South Africa have called up young left-arm pacer Kwena Maphaka, who impressed as the highest wicket-taker in the preceding T20I series. His inclusion adds variety to the fast-bowling group that already includes Nandre Burger and Lungi Ngidi. With Marco Jansen unavailable due to recovery from thumb surgery, the pace unit looks relatively inexperienced but promising. Seam-bowling allrounders Corbin Bosch and Wiaan Mulder also provide backup with both bat and ball.
For spin, South Africa have three options in Keshav Maharaj, Senuran Muthusamy, and Prenelan Subrayen, giving the side balance in Australian conditions. The loss of Rabada, however, leaves a major void in leadership and strike power within the bowling attack, considering his experience and ability to deliver in pressure moments.
The first ODI is being played at Cazaly’s Stadium in Cairns, with the next two scheduled at Mackay’s Great Barrier Reef Arena. Australia come into the series with momentum after edging South Africa 2-1 in a closely fought T20I contest. For the Proteas, this ODI series presents an opportunity to test their bench strength and assess combinations ahead of future assignments, while also giving youngsters like Maphaka valuable exposure against a strong Australian side.
