The 17th edition of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) began on Saturday, November 23, featuring 38 teams competing for the prestigious T20 title organized by the BCCI. This year’s tournament carries added significance as it coincides with the lead-up to the IPL 2025 mega auction, scheduled for November 24 and 25 in Jeddah. Indian players, including those in the auction pool, are eager to showcase their skills and boost their stock ahead of the highly anticipated event.

Ishan Kishan Misses Opening Match Due to Injury
Jharkhand wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan, however, missed the chance to impress franchises as he was ruled out of his team’s opener against Jammu and Kashmir due to a neck spasm. This marks another setback for Kishan, who has been out of favor in the Indian setup and missed last season’s SMAT for personal reasons. The injury prevented him from showcasing his skills before the IPL auction. Mumbai Indians had released him after previously securing him for ₹15.25 crore in 2022, and he will now go under the hammer.
Shreyas Iyer Shines in SMAT
While Kishan struggled with fitness issues, fellow Indian cricketer Shreyas Iyer grabbed attention with a stellar performance. After facing criticism earlier this year for not prioritizing domestic cricket, Iyer returned to lead Mumbai in SMAT. In a spectacular display, he scored a blistering 47-ball hundred and finished with 130, the sixth-highest individual score in the tournament’s history.
For players like Kishan, SMAT serves as a vital platform to prove their form and value. With the IPL auction just days away, performances in the ongoing tournament could play a key role in shaping franchise strategies.
