India fast bowler Mohammed Shami is making significant progress in his recovery from an ankle injury that has kept him out of action since the ODI World Cup in November 2023. Shami is currently undergoing the final stages of rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru. He resumed bowling last month, gradually increasing his workload without experiencing any pain.

The Indian selectors are closely monitoring Mohammed Shami’s recovery, with discussions underway on whether he should participate in at least one of the Duleep Trophy 2024 matches starting on September 5 in Anantapur to prove his fitness. The goal is for Shami to be ready for the Test series against Bangladesh, which begins on September 19 in Chennai.
Chief selector Ajit Agarkar has expressed optimism about Shami’s progress, stating that the first Test against Bangladesh was always the target for his comeback. Even if Mohammed Shami misses some of India’s home Tests, which include two against Bangladesh and three against New Zealand, he still has opportunities to regain his form before the tour of Australia in November. The Ranji Trophy 2024 and India’s A team matches in Australia provide additional platforms for Shami to build his rhythm.
Shami’s injury, initially thought to be minor, worsened, leading to surgery and his subsequent absence from the Test series against England and the IPL 2024. Despite the setback, Mohammed Shami remains a crucial player for India, especially after his stellar performance in the ODI World Cup, where he took 24 wickets in seven games.
