India faces a potential setback ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy as uncertainty surrounds Jasprit Bumrah’s availability for the tournament. The star pacer, who developed a back swelling, has been in rehabilitation since his injury during the final Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is actively exploring backup options for the marquee event. According to a report by The Times of India (TOI), New Zealand-based orthopedic surgeon Dr. Rowan Schouten is assessing Bumrah’s condition. The bowler may travel to New Zealand for a consultation after the surgeon provides a detailed report.
A source revealed to TOI that the BCCI is closely monitoring Bumrah’s recovery, but his participation in the Champions Trophy appears doubtful. “The medical team is in touch with Schouten. The BCCI planned a visit to New Zealand, but it hasn’t happened yet. The selectors doubt Bumrah will be fully fit in time, saying it would take a miracle.
Dr. Schouten had previously treated Bumrah in 2022, addressing a recurring back injury that forced him to miss the T20 World Cup. His unique bowling action has often contributed to repeated back issues throughout his career.
If Bumrah is unavailable, Mohammed Shami will likely lead India’s pace attack. Shami, known for his partnership with Bumrah, has worked on his fitness and is reportedly in excellent form. He will play in the upcoming ODI series against England, which will strengthen his position for the Champions Trophy.
India will be hoping for Bumrah’s miraculous recovery but appears prepared to move forward with Shami at the helm of the pace unit.
