Gautam Gambhir, the head coach of the Indian cricket team, faces significant legal challenges after a Delhi Court ordered a fresh investigation into a real estate cheating case. This decision came after the court set aside a previous discharge order from a magistrate court, allowing the complaint from flat buyers to proceed. Gambhir, who served as the brand ambassador for a real estate project and also held a director position on its board, misled buyers.

The allegations involve several real estate firms, including Rudra Buildwell Realty Pvt. Ltd, H R Infracity Pvt Ltd., and U M Architectures and Contractors Ltd. They collaborated on a joint venture, with Gambhir promoting the project to potential homebuyers. Complaints from buyers, who invested between INR 6 lakh and INR 16 lakh, surfaced after they discovered that the project lacked legal permits and never commenced construction.
Gambhir, who served as the brand ambassador for a real estate project and also held a director position on its board, misled buyers. The court noted that Gambhir received payments beyond what was appropriate for his role as an ambassador, highlighting his direct involvement in the project.
This legal situation adds pressure on Gautam Gambhir, who has already faced criticism for the Indian team’s performance. Under his coaching, India recently suffered its first home series defeat in 12 years and ended a 28-year winning streak against New Zealand in an ODI series.
In light of Gambhir’s legal troubles, VVS Laxman is expected to temporarily step in as head coach for the upcoming bilateral series against South Africa. This arrangement is due to scheduling conflicts, with the Test series starting on November 22 and the T20I series set for November 8-15.
