Fakhar Zaman Injured as Pakistan Begins Champions Trophy Title Defence

Pakistan’s Champions Trophy title defence began on a shaky note as Fakhar Zaman suffered an injury scare just two balls into their opening match against New Zealand in Karachi. While chasing a boundary shot from Will Young, Fakhar cut off the ball and flicked it to Babar Azam but immediately appeared to feel discomfort in his lower back. He signaled for assistance and walked off with the physio, though without requiring external support.

Fakhar Faces Injury Scare; Ravindra Still Not Fit

Pakistan has already suffered a similar injury blow before the tournament. Saim Ayub had twisted his ankle while fielding in a Test against South Africa, resulting in a fracture that ruled him out until at least mid-March.Pakistan initially left Fakhar out of their ODI plans but brought him back as Ayub’s replacement. He made an immediate impact, scoring 84 off 69 and 41 off 28.

On a positive note, Pakistan received a boost with Haris Rauf returning to the XI after recovering from a side strain he suffered in a triangular series involving New Zealand and South Africa. New Zealand, however, was without Rachin Ravindra, who suffered a forehead injury in the same series after misjudging a ball at the boundary. Though he has shown no signs of delayed concussion and trained before the game, he was not risked and instead carried drinks for his teammates.

This match marks the return of ICC tournament cricket to Pakistan after nearly three decades, with massive crowds gathering outside Karachi’s National Stadium. Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari attended the opening ceremony, which also featured an air force fly-past parade. Pakistan won the toss and opted to bowl first.
