Allegations of corruption have rocked the T20 World Cup 2024, hosted in West Indies and USA. Reports emerged that a former Kenyan cricketer attempted to involve an Ugandan seamer in a potential match-fixing scheme during the tournament’s league stage matches in Guyana. The seamer, whose identity remains undisclosed, acted responsibly by promptly reporting the approach to the ICC’s anti-corruption unit.

According to PTI, the former Kenyan cricketer made multiple attempts to contact the Ugandan player using different mobile numbers. ICC’s Anti-Corruption Unit swiftly responded to the incident by issuing a warning circular to all associate nations, alerting them to the possibility of match-fixing approaches from the former international player.
Sources familiar with the matter highlighted the vulnerability of players from associate nations to such approaches, noting that they are often perceived as softer targets compared to players from major cricketing nations. The source praised the Ugandan player for taking immediate action to report the approach to ICC, thereby preventing potential corruption in the tournament.
Under ICC regulations, players approached by bookies must promptly report such incidents to avoid facing corruption charges themselves. Failure to do so could result in severe penalties, potentially including a lifetime ban from cricket. This strict protocol aims to uphold the integrity of the sport and deter any form of corruption during tournaments like the T20 World Cup.
The incident underscores the ongoing vigilance and scrutiny around corruption in cricket, especially during high-profile events like the T20 World Cup. Despite Uganda’s limited success in the tournament’s group stage, where they managed only one victory against PNG, the integrity of the sport remains a top priority for ICC and cricket authorities worldwide.
