In a surprising turn of events, Chris Silverwood has resigned as the head coach of the Sri Lankan national cricket team following disappointing performances in the 2023 ODI World Cup in India and the 2024 T20 World Cup in the West Indies and USA.

Silverwood’s tenure began positively, with Sri Lanka winning the 2022 T20 Asia Cup and reaching the finals of the 50-over Asia Cup in 2023. Under his leadership, the team also secured notable victories, including a home ODI series win against Australia and away Test series wins over Bangladesh.
Citing personal reasons, Silverwood explained his departure as necessary due to the demanding nature of international coaching. “Being an international coach means long periods away from loved ones. After lengthy conversations with my family and with a heavy heart, I feel it is now time for me to return home and spend some quality time together,” said Silverwood in an SLC statement. He thanked the players, coaches, backroom staff, and management for their support, emphasizing the honor he felt being part of Sri Lanka Cricket and the fond memories he will take away.
Mahela Jayawardene Also Steps Down
Prior to Silverwood’s resignation, former Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene also stepped down from his role as consultant coach, which he had held since 2022.
Disappointing T20 World Cup Performance
The Wanindu Hasaranga-led side’s performance in the T20 World Cup was particularly disheartening. In Group D of the first round, alongside South Africa, Bangladesh, Nepal, and the Netherlands, Sri Lanka failed to progress beyond the initial stage. Early losses to South Africa and Bangladesh and a washed-out game against Nepal left their sole victory against the Netherlands insufficient for further qualification.
Moving Forward
As Sri Lanka looks to rebuild, their focus shifts to the upcoming white-ball series against India in July and August. The series, consisting of three T20Is and three ODIs, will provide an opportunity for the team to regroup and move past their recent disappointments.
