Sri Lanka has announced a 17-member squad for the ODI series in New Zealand, which is set to take place on January 5, 8, and 11. Notably, Charith Asalanka has been named captain, leading a side that effectively combines youth and experience. Following their recent 2-0 series win against New Zealand at home, Sri Lanka will now aim to carry that momentum into the challenging Kiwi conditions.

The squad sees a few changes. Sadeera Samarawickrama, Dushan Hemantha, and Dilshan Madushanka are out, while Lahiru Kumara, Eshan Malinga, and Wanindu Hasaranga make their return. Hasaranga’s comeback is a significant boost, as his all-round abilities are crucial on New Zealand’s testing pitches.
Pathum Nissanka and Charith Asalanka, in excellent form, will anchor the batting lineup. Experienced players like Kusal Mendis and Avishka Fernando add depth, while Kamindu Mendis and Janith Liyanage strengthen the middle order. Nuwanidu Fernando also offers promise as a young talent.
The bowling unit is equally balanced. Spinners Wanindu Hasaranga, Maheesh Theekshana, and Jeffrey Vandersay will play vital roles. The pace attack features Lahiru Kumara, Asitha Fernando, and Chamidu Wickramasinghe, with Eshan Malinga adding variety.
The matches will be played in Wellington, Hamilton, and Auckland. While the conditions favour New Zealand, Sri Lanka has the resources to challenge the hosts. Success will depend on the batters’ ability to adapt quickly and the bowlers’ discipline.
