Chappell-Hadlee Trophy to Expand to Include T20I Series Between Australia and New Zealand

The prestigious Chappell-Hadlee Trophy, traditionally awarded to the winner of bilateral ODI series between Australia and New Zealand, will now also be up for grabs in T20I series between the two trans Tasman rivals. This change comes ahead of the upcoming three match T20I series set to commence on Wednesday in Wellington.

With this update, we will further elevate the significance of the trophy, ensuring increased visibility and profile for the coveted prize. Additionally, we will implement a points structure during back to back ODI and T20I series to prevent the swift turn over of the trophy.

Expressing his approval of the decision, Sir Richard Hadlee, representing his family, high lighted the importance of maintaining the trophys relevance across both formats. He emphasized the value of ensuring that all matches contribute to the trophy’s stakes, thereby providing ample incentive for spirited competition.

Greg Chappell echoed Hadlee’s sentiments, expressing his satisfaction with the inclusion of bilateral T20I series in the Chappell-Hadlee Trophy framework. He particularly emphasized the opportunity for young Australian players to show case their talents alongside their Kiwi counterparts in pursuit of the prestigious trophy.

Highlighting the significance of the enduring rivalry between Australia and New Zealand, Cricket Australia chief Nick Hockley emphasized the heightened relevance that the expanded Chappell-Hadlee Trophy will hold in the years to come.

Similarly, New Zealand Cricket chief Scott Weenink under scored the importance of honoring the history and heritage of the rivalry while embracing the evolution of the trophy to encompass T20I cricket. He emphasized the significance of preserving the legacy for future generations of players and fans alike.

The Chappell-Hadlee Trophy, inaugurated in December 2004, has seen Australia claim victory seven times, while New Zealand has emerged triumphant on four occasions. With this extension to include T20I series, the trophys legacy is poised to continue, honoring the rich history and competitive spirit between the two cricketing nations.
