Champions Trophy: PCB vows to do what’s best for Pakistan cricket

PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi has reiterated that any decision regarding the hosting of the Champions Trophy should be based on equality. As the ICC prepares for a potential vote on the issue on November 29, Naqvi emphasized that the PCB remains steadfast in its position. He has been in regular communication with ICC chairman Greg Barclay and confirmed that his team is in constant contact with the ICC.

Naqvi made it clear during a press conference at Gaddafi Stadium that the PCB’s stance is firm. He stated, “We’ll do what is best for Pakistan cricket,” and stressed that it was unacceptable for Pakistan to play in India while India refuses to tour Pakistan. He also made it clear that the board would not accept a hybrid model where India plays its matches in another country.

The Champions Trophy is scheduled to take place in Pakistan across three venues in February and March 2025, but India has refused to travel, citing the absence of government permission. The PCB chairman pointed out that India has not provided any written objections to Pakistan’s hosting, but he did not directly address whether the hybrid model remains under consideration.

Naqvi stated that the PCB would take any final decision to the Pakistani government for approval. He also urged Jay Shah, who will transition from BCCI secretary to ICC chairman, to prioritize the ICC’s interests once in his new role. Naqvi assured that the PCB would prioritize what is best for Pakistan, rather than being financially motivated.
