Tom Curran, the third-highest wicket-taker among overseas bowlers in the BBL and the leading fast bowler, is looking for a fresh start after a challenging season. Last year, much of the attention around Curran was due to his suspension for intimidating an umpire, which overshadowed his on-field achievements.

Curran received a four-game ban after an incident with fourth umpire Muhammad Qureshi during warm-ups before a Sydney Sixers game against the Hobart Hurricanes. Despite taking 3 for 19 in that match, including his 50th BBL wicket, Curran played only two more games before a knee injury ended his season. The Sixers’ appeal against the suspension was unsuccessful.
For the 2024-25 BBL season, Curran will join the Melbourne Stars on a two-year pre-draft deal. He will be available for the entire competition. The Sixers are exploring other overseas options, particularly a spinner, following Steve O’Keefe’s retirement. Curran feels he’s leaving the Sixers on good terms, despite the way his previous season ended.
“I don’t feel like it was an issue with the Sixers,” Curran told ESPNcricinfo. “They backed me, and I appreciated that. I gave my all and made some great friends. It felt like the right time for a change, and the Stars offered a multi-year contract that suits my loyalty.”
Currently, Curran is playing for the Oval Invincibles in The Hundred 2024, having recovered from a serious injury he sustained in the T20 Blast. He underwent surgery for a broken left forearm and is now using a protective carbon fiber guard. Curran, who has battled stress fractures in the past, remains focused on contributing to his teams and is confident in his ability to make an impact, whether or not he receives another England call-up.
