Ahead of the critical second Test against New Zealand in Pune, India’s bowling coach, Morne Morkel, took on an unexpected role as a net bowler to help prepare the batters. In a video shared by the BCCI, the former South African pacer showcased his skills by bowling in the nets, marking his first time doing so in almost a year.
Morkel’s Journey to India

After a challenging tenure with the Pakistan cricket team, Morkel joined the Indian setup at the recommendation of head coach Gautam Gambhir. With a celebrated career as one of South Africa’s top pacers, the coaching staff brought him in to mentor both emerging and established Indian bowlers.
Reliving Old Memories
During the net session, Morkel rolled his arm over to assist the batters, admitting he was cautious to avoid injury. Despite his reservations, he enjoyed the experience, reminiscing about his playing days in subcontinental conditions. Morkel notably took 21 wickets in 8 Tests in India, with a best figure of 6/54.
Upcoming Test Match
The second Test between India and New Zealand kicks off on October 24 in Pune. India plans to make a couple of changes to adapt to the pitch and weather conditions, as the Kiwis lead the three-match series 1-0.
Positive News for the Indian Team
In a positive update for the team, wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant has been declared fit after suffering a knee injury in the first Test. Shubman Gill, who missed the last match due to neck stiffness, is also available for selection. The team management will need to decide if KL Rahul retains his spot in the playing XI, given his recent underwhelming performances.
