Ben Stokes has expressed willingness to return to England’s white-ball teams if Brendon McCullum asks him, although he emphasizes that such discussions have not yet taken place. Stokes, who is focused on regaining fitness to lead the upcoming Test tour to Pakistan, last played in a white-ball international during England’s disappointing ODI title defense in India last November.

Stokes, 33, famously contributed matchwinning innings in England’s World Cup victories in 2019 and 2022 but had previously retired from ODI cricket in 2022 due to concerns over burnout. He also withdrew from the recent T20 World Cup to prioritize his recovery from a knee operation. However, with the Champions Trophy approaching in February, selectors have mentioned Stokes and Joe Root as potential options.
Having established a strong bond with McCullum during their Test captain-coach partnership, Stokes is open to a return if it benefits the evolving white-ball squad, which features new talents like Jacob Bethell, whom he believes will become a “superstar.” He noted, “It’s an amazing opportunity for the white-ball team to experience what Baz has brought to the Test team,” emphasizing the alignment in messaging and philosophy across all formats.
As for his immediate focus, Stokes is preparing for the Test series in Pakistan, starting October 7 in Multan. He missed the recent Sri Lanka series due to a hamstring tear but is optimistic about his fitness. Stokes commented, “I’m feeling really good,” and is hopeful about receiving a positive update from his upcoming scan. He acknowledges the challenges ahead, particularly with the conditions in Pakistan, which may differ significantly from their last visit.
