Swiftly drafted into the Australian ODI squad, Queensland’s hard-hitting batsman Ben McDermott replaces Matt Short due to a hamstring injury. McDermott’s inclusion comes after an impressive century for Queensland against Tasmania in the Sheffield Shield, where he scored an unbeaten 146. The 29-year-old’s fine form in the recently concluded Big Bash, where he secured the seventh spot in the run-scorers list, further justified his call-up.
With Short unable to field in the series-clinching win against the West Indies at the SCG on Saturday, McDermott’s addition brings a seasoned T20 and ODI player to the Australian lineup. McDermott, who made his international debut in 2018, has represented Australia in 25 T20Is and six ODIs, with his most recent appearance in the T20 series in India.

Matt Short, aiming to solidify his place in the ODI squad, faced disappointment with the injury setback. McDermott, joining a team that has seen four debutantes in the opening two matches of the series, adds experience and firepower to the batting order.
Reflecting on the team’s evolving dynamics, star all-rounder Sean Abbott, who played a pivotal role in Australia’s recent victory, expressed optimism about the future. Abbott, named the Player of the Match for his contributions with both bat and ball, acknowledged the proactive approach of the debutants and highlighted the emergence of potential long-term options for the team.
As Australia prepares for the final ODI against the West Indies in Canberra, McDermott’s inclusion is expected to bolster the batting lineup and contribute to the team’s efforts to maintain their winning momentum in the series.
