BCCI to Hold IPL Mega Auction Despite SRH and KKR Objections

Despite objections from KKR and SRH owners, the BCCI plans to proceed with the IPL mega auction ahead of the 2025 season. During a meeting on July 31, KKR owner Shah Rukh Khan and SRH owner Kavya Maran expressed their desire to cancel the auction, arguing for continuity and maintaining the core of their squads.

Other franchise owners suggested holding the mega auction every five years, but the BCCI has decided to move forward with their current plan. The board has decided to allow teams to retain 6-8 players through retention and the Right to Match (RTM) options. The IPL 2025 auction and retention rules will finalize by the end of the month.

Delhi Capitals co-owner Parth Jindal recently supported the idea of a mega auction every three years. He highlighted that while there was debate over the auction’s future, maintaining a competitive tournament requires regularly refreshing squad strength.

Additionally, discussions included the future of the impact player rule, with some franchises proposing its removal. They believe that the rule hampers the development of all-rounders, impacting the growth of versatile players in the league.
