The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will hold a Special General Meeting (SGM) in January 2025 to elect new office-bearers following the resignations of Jay Shah as secretary and Ashish Shelar as treasurer. The BCCI plans to hold the meeting on January 12 at its headquarters in Mumbai, pending final confirmation. The Apex Council approved this decision during an urgent virtual meeting on December 19.

After Jay Shah’s resignation, the board temporarily assigned his responsibilities to joint secretary Devjit Saikia. Similarly, Ashish Shelar’s departure left a significant void in the board’s leadership. The primary agenda of the upcoming SGM is to address these vacancies and appoint new officials. State units have already received notifications about the meeting, with the final date and venue expected to be confirmed by December 20, 2024.
The SGM comes at a critical time for the BCCI as it faces international challenges, including managing the Champions Trophy 2025. Under Jay Shah’s leadership, the board finalized a hybrid model for the tournament, with India’s matches played at neutral venues.
Jay Shah recently assumed the role of the youngest-ever ICC chairman on December 1, further elevating his stature in cricket administration. Meanwhile, Ashish Shelar has taken on a political role as a cabinet minister in the newly-formed Maharashtra government.
The BCCI aims to finalize these key appointments swiftly to ensure smooth functioning. With its leadership in transition, the SGM will play a pivotal role in shaping the board’s future amid evolving domestic and international challenges.
