The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced plans to revamp the pay structure for Test matches, aiming to boost players’ interest and participation in the longest format of the game. In response to concerns over players prioritizing T20 leagues like the Indian Premier League (IPL) over Test cricket, the BCCI intends to increase Test match fees and introduce additional bonuses for players who participate in all Test series within a calendar year.

Currently, cricketers receive ₹15 lakh per Test, ₹6 lakh for each One Day International (ODI), and ₹3 lakh for T20 Internationals. However, following the conclusion of IPL 2024, the BCCI plans to revise the pay structure for Tests significantly. Moreover, players who represent India in all Test series throughout a year will be eligible for a bonus in addition to their central contract fees.

This move seeks to address the recent trend of players prioritizing T20 leagues over Test cricket. This trend has been exemplified by Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer opting out of domestic cricket to focus on IPL 2024 preparations. Additionally, BCCI Secretary Jay Shah has emphasized the importance of centrally contracted players participating in domestic tournaments like the Ranji Trophy, underscoring the significance of red-ball cricket.

The proposed changes are expected to be implemented after IPL 2024. With Team India actively competing in the 2023-25 World Test Championship and facing upcoming series against Sri Lanka, New Zealand, and Australia, these initiatives aim to reinforce the importance of Test cricket and incentivize players to prioritize their participation in the format.
