The BCCI is reportedly considering appointing a batting coach for the Indian men’s cricket team following the fallout from their Border-Gavaskar Trophy defeat. Cricbuzz reports that the proposal came up during a recent review meeting in Mumbai. Head coach Gautam Gambhir, captain Rohit Sharma, chief selector Ajit Agarkar, and senior BCCI officials attended the meeting.
Under Gambhir’s tenure, India has faced several disappointing performances, with the Border-Gavaskar series loss intensifying calls for his removal. Fans and experts alike have raised concerns over the team’s preparation and coaching setup. Currently, the support staff includes Abhishek Nayar (assistant coach), T Dilip (fielding coach), and Morne Morkel (bowling coach), but there is no dedicated batting coach.
The absence of a batting coach became evident after dismal performances from senior batters Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma during the series. Kohli managed just 190 runs in nine innings, while Rohit scored only 31 runs in five innings. Reports suggest that the BCCI is considering former domestic cricket stalwarts for the role but has not confirmed any names.
Adding to the turmoil, dressing room controversies have surfaced. During the Australian tour, confidential team discussions were leaked to the media, sparking a rift between Gambhir and Rohit Sharma. When questioned at the review meeting, Gambhir reportedly blamed Sarfaraz Khan for the leaks, accusing him of giving unauthorized interviews.
The BCCI’s decision on appointing a batting coach could prove crucial in addressing the team’s struggles and enhancing performance, especially in Test cricket. Whether these changes will stabilize Indian cricket’s coaching framework remains uncertain.
