BCCI Forces KL Rahul to Play in ODI Series Against England

KL Rahul, who had requested a break from India’s white-ball series against England, has now been instructed by the BCCI to participate in the upcoming ODI series. Despite his wish to skip the series, Rahul’s request has been turned down as the Champions Trophy approaches rapidly. The BCCI has emphasized his importance in the ODI setup and wants him to be match-fit ahead of India’s opening game on February 20.

Rahul’s wish to rest for the T20I series against England has been honored, however, and he will get some time off before the ODIs begin next month. As a key figure in the middle order and as a wicketkeeper, Rahul’s participation in the ODIs is considered crucial for his preparation ahead of the Champions Trophy.

The selectors had initially planned to rest Rahul for the entire white-ball series, but following a change in strategy, the BCCI decided to include him in the ODI squad. A source told TOI that the decision was made to ensure Rahul gains adequate match practice before the high-stakes tournament.

Rahul was a vital contributor in the 2023 World Cup, playing significant innings that helped India secure victories. His experience and form in ODIs are seen as essential for India’s success in the upcoming Champions Trophy.

In addition, the announcement of India’s squad for the Champions Trophy, originally scheduled for January 12, has been delayed. This is partly due to ongoing discussions regarding squad selection, as well as concerns about Jasprit Bumrah’s fitness, which have contributed to the delay.
