The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has introduced strict new guidelines to enforce discipline within the national team, placing head coach Gautam Gambhir at the center of controversy. The crackdown follows concerns over Gambhir’s use of a personal assistant (PA) during the recent Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia, where protocol breaches and unauthorized access raised alarm bells.
During the Australia tour, Gambhir’s PA reportedly accessed restricted areas, including team transport reserved for selectors, the BCCI hospitality box in Adelaide, and player-only zones in the team hotel. BCCI officials viewed these actions as breaches of privacy and potential risks for internal leaks. “Why did a non-staff member enter selectors’ vehicles or private spaces? “These lapses cannot be accepted,” a BCCI official said.
In response, the BCCI has barred all support staff from traveling with personal aides. Gambhir’s PA, once a familiar presence, now stays in a separate hotel during the ICC Champions Trophy in Dubai and cannot access team facilities. This move highlights the board’s determination to eliminate unauthorized access and distractions.
Ironically, Gambhir, who had pushed for structural changes after reports of a fractured team environment in Australia, now faces the consequences of the new rules. He remains the only coach who traveled with a personal assistant, a privilege the updated guidelines have revoked.
The new directives also prohibit players from bringing families or partners on tour unless they cover costs independently. Additionally, the BCCI has restricted access to personal chefs, stylists, and agents, reinforcing its commitment to safeguarding team privacy and unity ahead of major tournaments.
